I recently shared on LinkedIn that I plan to leave Google in the fall of this year, after an incredible 13.5 year run during which I served as the Chief Privacy Officer and as the leader of the global Privacy and Consumer Protection Legal teams. I’ll share more things I’ve learned, anecdotes and adventure stories from my time at Google and in prior roles, but that can wait. Today I wanted to write a bit about the current state of my thinking regarding next my next move.
I’m going to finish up at Google at the end of September, with most of the time between now and then spent helping my team get settled into the new organizational structure. After that, I expect to hit the ground running with my next endeavor in the fall. Many have advised me to take my time, and I do intend to be very considered and deliberate. That said, part of what hardened my resolve that it was time for a new challenge was the growing certainty that I was leaving a growing percentage on the table. I’m not looking for a break or a rest. That’s not who I am or how I’m wired. I’m looking for a bigger challenge. I want to set myself up to scale the positive impact I can have to an even larger level. I want to help solve the hardest problems I can find, with the best people.
I’m fortunate to have an astonishing network of friends supporting me as I explore. I’m going to cast the widest possible net at the front end, narrowing my options to a decision before the fall.
We’ll see. I’m feeling lucky, again, and I’m excited about the future.
